After a warm and joyful Greek Easter celebration in Achladokampo, my friend Georgia and I chose to drive to Agios Petros, a picturesque mountain village located along the Epar. Od Tripolis road in the Peloponnese. This delightful village offers a peaceful retreat with its authentic local culture, traditional foods, and friendly shops. I'm pleased to share that our visit once more unveiled a side of Greece that I truly cherish, full of genuine flavors and heartfelt hospitality.

Discovering the Village Atmosphere

Agios Petros is nestled peacefully in the hills, surrounded by lush greenery and fresh mountain air. The village streets are narrow lined with stone houses, some decorated with colorful shutters and flowerpots that add a splash of life and color to the delightful rustic setting. While wandering through the village, we came across several small shops displaying local products. These stores provide a range of items, such as homemade jams and honey, along with herbs and olive oil, all sourced locally.

The residents are welcoming and eager to share stories about their traditions and the history of the area. This bond with the place and its people made Agios Petros feel a bit like a living museum of Greek mountain life, where customs are both preserved and celebrated every day!

One highlight of our visit was stopping at Neilos bakery, a beloved spot known for its traditional sweets and baked goods. The aroma of freshly baked bread and cookies filled the air as we stepped inside. The bakery offers a variety of treats, including:

• Diples: honey-soaked fried pastry, often sprinkled with nuts

• Moustokoulourakia: traditional grape molasses cookies

• Kourabiedes: buttery almond cookies dusted with powdered sugar

• Rusk: twice-baked bread perfect for dipping in coffee or wine

• Freshly baked bread with a crisp crust and soft interior

Every item was infused with the essence of local history, crafted using recipes handed down over generations. The bakery's distinctive ambiance encourages guests to stay awhile and enjoy the flavors at a leisurely pace.

Enjoying the Best Cheese and Spinach Pies

After exploring the shops and bakery, we found a charming family run tavern near the village square called O Karras & o Parnonas. The tavern’s rustic wooden tables and stone walls created a cozy setting for a meal. As we didn't feel like a big meal, we ordered cheese and spinach pies, a staple of Greek mountain cuisine. I have to admit that these pies were some of the best pies I've had in a Greek tavern and stood out for their flaky, golden crust and rich filling made from fresh local cheese and wild spinach.

The tavern owner's daughter mentioned to us that her mother makes the pies daily using ingredients sourced from nearby farms and gardens. This commitment to freshness and tradition, much to my delight, shone through in every bite.
