Exploring Thessaloniki offers more than just a dive into its historical wealth and vibrant city life. On my recent trip to Thessaloniki with friends from Iceland, our adventure extended beyond exploring the city's historical depth and lively character, as we also indulged in two refreshing coastal escapes nearby. One day we relaxed at the Peraia Beach and on another day we sailed to Ammoulinia Island, Banana Beach, and the stunning Blue Lagoon near Chalkidiki, combining local flavors, scenic views, and memorable seaside experiences.

A Relaxing Start at Peraia Beach
After immersing ourselves in Thessaloniki’s historical sites and culture we headed to the nearby Peraia Beach for a day of sun and sea. This beach, located about a 30–40-minute drive from the city center, offers a peaceful retreat with its pristine sands and serene waters. After checking out the coastline with its many bars, sunbeds and umbrellas we chose to stay at the Capo Di Faro beach bar, a popular spot known for its laid-back atmosphere and refreshing beverages.
The beach bar provided the perfect setting to unwind while enjoying the gentle sea breeze. The friendly staff served a variety of local beverages and light snacks, making it easy to relax and soak in the surroundings. The view of the Aegean Sea stretching out to the horizon was a constant reminder of the beauty just outside the city.
Lunch by the Sea at O Lakis Tavern
Following a morning spent swimming and sunbathing, we headed for a late lunch, Greek style, at O Lakis, a traditional seaside tavern recommended by a local for its authentic Greek cuisine. Situated right on the waterfront, the tavern offered us the pleasure of dining with a stunning view and the soothing sound of nearby waves.
The menu offered a wide array of excellent options, including freshly caught daily seafood and traditional Greek dishes such as grilled octopus, fried calamari, and an assortment of meze plates and luscious salads, which we ended up ordering!
The flavors were vibrant and true to the region, highlighting the quality of local ingredients. Sharing this meal with my friends as the sun shimmered on the water made for an ideal midday break.
Journey to Chalkidiki and the Blue Lagoon Cruise

The next day, we spent our time in Thessaloniki exploring several Byzantine churches and Museums. However, the day after we went on a new adventure with a cruise departing from Ormos Panagias, a quaint port town (photo on left) that we reached by a tour bus from central Thessaloniki. The bus journey was picturesque, winding through lush landscapes and small villages, perfectly setting the mood for a day of discovery.
Once we boarded the boat named Athos, our cruise set off for Ammouliani Island, the only inhabited island in the Chalkidiki region. When we arrived, we were informed that we had an hour and a half to explore the island.

However, since I was feeling hungry, I suggested we visit the island's only bakery before exploring. Upon reaching the bakery, we found that the owner was not present, but she had left a note on the door in Greek that read, "I'm in the basement, so just call out my name, Voula!" We found this to be a charming and amusing way to welcome customers. After calling out a few times, Voula emerged, greeted us warmly, and prepared excellent coffee, which we enjoyed along with freshly baked treats on the bakery's doorstep, accompanied by one of the local cats, giving us a taste of local traditions.
Beach Time at Banana Beach

As the cruise continued, our next destination was Banana Beach, renowned for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters. We enjoyed swimming in the ocean and relaxing on the beach. The excursion featured a delightful lunch at the beach bar's seafront area, offering grilled pork souvlaki or grilled vegetables for vegetarians, along with a fresh tomato salad, Tsatsiki (yoghurt cucumber dip), rice, and slices of bread from Voula's bakery. For beverages, we had the choice of a glass of juice or local white wine.
The beach's serene environment and natural beauty made it perfect for basking in the midday sun. The water was enticing, prompting most of its visitors to take a swim, while some engaged in snorkeling to explore the marine life close to the shore.
The Stunning Blue Lagoon Experience

The final stop on the cruise was the Blue Lagoon, a breathtaking natural pool known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. The lagoon’s calm and shallow waters create a perfect environment for swimming and snorkeling.
Here, some of the more adventurous passengers dove into the sea from the boat, while others, including my friends and I, watched in amazement at the clarity and color of the water.
The Blue Lagoon’s unique setting, surrounded by rocky cliffs and untouched nature, made it another memorable highlight of the trip.
Final Thoughts on the Coastal Escape

This journey from Thessaloniki to the nearby beaches and the Ammouliani island offered a refreshing contrast to the city’s urban energy. The combination of relaxing beach time, delicious local food, and a scenic boat ride created a well-rounded experience that showcased the region’s natural and cultural richness.
For anyone visiting Thessaloniki, I truly recommend setting aside a day or two to explore the coast and nearby islands. Whether you're relaxing at Peraia Beach, savoring a traditional meal by the sea, or sailing through the Blue Lagoon, these types of experiences bring depth and diversity to any journey.
Until soon again!
