Visiting Iceland provides numerous unforgettable experiences, including the tranquil beauty and comfort of the Laugarás Lagoon, which I enjoyed on a sunny day last week with a dear friend.

Nestled in the southern part of the country, this natural gem combines warm, soothing waters with breathtaking surroundings. After soaking in the lagoon’s inviting warmth, the perfect way to end the day is with a delicious Icelandic meal at the lagoon’s own restaurant. In this post I would like to share the highlights of my visit to the Laugarás Lagoon, from the relaxing water experience to the exceptional local cuisine.
Discovering Laugarás Lagoon’s Natural Charm
Laugarás Lagoon stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty and modern amenities. The lagoon’s natural hot spring water sourced from just a few hundred meters away, provides a warm and comfortable environment even on chilly days. Surrounded by rolling hills and untouched landscapes, the setting invites visitors to unwind and connect with nature.
The lagoon’s design respects the environment, with facilities that blend seamlessly into the landscape. Visitors can enjoy clean, modern well-maintained changing rooms, showers, and seating areas that enhance the experience without detracting from the natural feel. Actually, spending time in the lagoon feels like stepping into a natural spa. The water temperature is just right for relaxing without overheating, and the gentle steam rising from the surface adds to the calming atmosphere.
Enjoying the Lagoon Experience with a Friend
Exploring Laugarás Lagoon with one of my dearest friends brought an extra layer of meaning to this journey. Sharing tranquil moments and conversations in the warm water forged new enduring memories, fostering reflection and connection, which I will forever treasure.

The lagoon's design offers a range of bathing experiences, with areas for both social interaction and peaceful solitude. Whether you’re chatting at the water's edge ... gently floating ... exploring the cascading waterfall ... visiting the grotto in the lagoon's lower left corner ... or ... enjoying one the two saunas and cold pool for a refreshing plunge that will revitalize your senses ... visitors will encounter unparalleled experiences.

Furthermore, the natural scenery with its unique view over the banks of Hvítá (White River) also provide plenty of photo opportunities to capture the day's memorable moments.
Savoring Authentic Icelandic Fare with Modern Twists at the Lagoon’s Restaurant
Following our rejuvenating soak, the subsequent highlight was savoring an exceptional and remarkable early evening Icelandic Fare meal at the lagoon’s restaurant YLJA (which translates to warmth in Icelandic). The restaurant is helmed by one of Iceland's esteemed chefs, Gísli Matt, and is celebrated for offering some of the finest Icelandic cuisine in the area, which I can personally vouch for!

The restaurant features a modern decor and a bright dining area with large windows, as well as a spacious outdoor balcony that provides guests with breathtaking views of the lagoon and its surroundings. We were fortunate to secure a table on the balcony, where we relished each bite of our meal while the lagoon's ambiance, which perfectly matched its natural and earthy feel, further enriched our dining experience.

The restaurant's various menus emphasize fresh, locally sourced ingredients from nearby fisheries and geothermal greenhouses, crafted with exceptional care and creativity. Our Icelandic Fare menu for Two featured six exquisite dishes that were visually appealing but more importantly, bursting with flavors and ingenuity! Below see the menu and my photos of its various delicious dishes that we truly relished!
Forest Broth & Birch ... Tomato “Carpaccio with fermented tomatoes, fresh cheese & herbal oil and ... Laxey Salmon Crudo with horseradish cream, sorrel broth, cucumbers & radishes.
Cod “En Papilotte”with mash, rutabaga x.o, sunchokes, smoked hollandaise sauce & watercress ... Grilled Lamb Rib Eye, with rhubarb, feykir cheese, celeriac, almonds, lemon thyme & lamb jus and for dessert ... Skyr & Strawberries with white chocolate, whey & basil granita.
