The Fisherman's Tavern!

The Fisherman's Tavern in Marathonas

O Psaras (The Fisherman), located on the east side of the Marathon Beach, about 28 km from central Athens, is one of my all-time favorite fish taverns. It’s an ideal place for a week-end luncheon and a stroll by the see or a city-break that combines a short trip to the historic municipality of Marathon with a delicious meal by the sea!

Beach view from tavern

The family run tavern, which opened in 1949, is now in the hands of its 3rd generation of experts who know all about fresh fish and shellfish!

Lunch at the beach - summertime!

Lovely indoor fireplace . . . great for winter!

In the summertime you can enjoy your meal right on the beach but during the wintertime, the indoor facilities, just across the street, are comfy and inviting, with its lovely fireplace taking center stage. On the restaurant’s walls you will find many artistic black and white photos depicting the Marathon Beach village as well as many charming family photos portraying the tavern’s history and tradition.

Weighing fresh fish!

When it comes to the food, it’s all about fresh fish and shellfish but if you prefer, there are also endless choices of well-prepared mezethes (appetizers) to enjoy with a glass of ouzo or a glass of wine. Before ordering, do what I and my husband always do; listen to the owner’s suggestions. He will tell you all about the day’s catch and any other delicacies being prepared in the kitchen.

Old fashioned but truly tasty fish soup!

On our many visits in the past few years, my husband and I have tried just about everything on the menu! One of our absolute favorite dishes is the outstanding fish soup served the old fashioned way . . . in the pot with fish and veggies on the side! It's truly yummy and filling too!

Delicious fish-soup - Horta (steamed greens in back)

Fried whitebait (Marides)

Other favorites are the tavern's crispy fried whitebait (Marides), grilled sea bream (or other grilled fresh fish) and steamed leafy greens that are always perfectly cooked and served with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and splash of fresh lemon juice!

Octopus - before grilling!

I would also highly recommend their grilled octopus and pasta with jumbo shrimps or crab and for starters, try their fried zucchini, taramosalata (creamy fish roe dip) or perhaps their eggplant dip with carrots, grilled red peppers and fresh chopped parsley . . . . all truly delicious!

Fried zucchini - a great meze!
