The 20 & SJÖ mathús & bar, located in the outskirts of Reykjavik is a lovely, cozy restaurant serving tasty and well-presented food with influences from several Mediterranean countries and the USA.
The menu is quite varied with many fish and meat dishes being cooked in their Tennessee smoke oven with excellent results. They also have a vegan and small plate menu with some good choices; one of my favorites being the Turkish Pide . . . that we in Greece call Peinerli . . . basically a bread boat made with a dough similar to a pizza dough and filled with tomatoes, Feta cheese, Greek yogurt and fresh herbs.
Their Pastrami, marinated in coriander and spices for ten days and cooked in their Tennessee oven for 14 hours, is also outstanding and if you feel like a drink with a snack, make sure to try their olives. . . that are about the best I’ve had in Iceland!
If you like it spicy, they have a Louisiana Cajun fish dish with a special kick or their seasonal salad with a Lebanese chicken skewer.
When it comes to beverages, I have to admit I haven’t tried any of their cocktails but they have a pretty good selection of wines and I was particularly happy to see some Greek wines like the Chardonnay and a top notch red Agioritko from the Costa Lazaridis vineyards in Drama (northern Greece) . . . that I ordered and enjoyed with my Icelandic besties on my last visit . . . just a week ago!
The service is always great and for the holiday season they serve a special week-end brunch in a simple and festive atmosphere that is family friendly, warm and inviting!
Reservations always recommended!
